Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EG (PED)
PRESSURE TRANSMITTERS of BD SENSORS GmbH
Classification of the devices acc. to Directive 97/23/EC - Pressure Equipment Directive
For safety reasons, the company BD SENSORS GmbH goes out with the following conservative acceptance:
Measuring media are gases and liquids of the fluid group 1: dangerous fluids.
The pressure transmitter of BD SENSORS GmbH can be distinguished in 3 groups according to Pressure
Equipment Directive, also shortened as PED:
- Devices without pressure chamber
- pressure intermediaries and/or pressure transmitters with pressure intermediary, e.g. DMP 331 P
- screwed probes and/or pressure transmitters with front-flush fitting pressure sensor,
e.g.. LMP 331, LMK 331, LMK 351
- dipping probes, e.g.. LMP/LMK 307, LMK 382, LMK 858
These devices do not fall under the Pressure Equipment Directive, since they have no and/or only a safetyrelevant
negligibly small pressure chamber.
According to the Article 1 paragraph 2 number 2.1.4 PED; pressure equipment must have "a pressurebearing
housing ", which is compellingly related to an identifiable pressure chamber.
Result: Pressure Equipment Directive does not apply to this group;
no marking according to Pressure Equipment Directive
- Devices with volumes < 0.1 liters and pressure = 200 bar
- pressure transmitters with back-embedded pressure sensor with an allowable
pressure up to 200 bar, e.g. DMP 331, DMP 343, 18.600
With these devices the pressure sensor is mounted back in relation to the pressure connection. Thus a
volume loaded by pressure results in the device. Since it concerns electronic pressure transmitters, the
volumes of all these devices are smaller than 0.1 liters.
To this group of equipment article 3 paragraph 3 of the Pressure Equipment Directive applies: the devices
"must be designed and fabricated in agreement with sound engineering practise valid in one of the
member states. For sound engineering practise, the abbreviation SEP is also existing
Result: the devices must be fabricated in accordance to sound engineering practise (SEP);
no marking according to Pressure Equipment Directive
- Devices with volumes of < 0.1 liters and pressure > 200 bar
- pressure transmitters with back-embedded pressure sensor with an allowable
pressure higher than 200 bar, e.g. DMP 333, DMP 334, DMP 335, 26.600
According to guideline 1/5 to Pressure Equipment Directive the essential safety requirements of Annex I
apply to this group. Concerning the demanded conformity assessment procedure each "module or single
combination of modules set out in paragraph 1 of Annex II" can be chosen. Therefore the module A
"internal production control" fulfills all respective requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive.
Result: essential safety requirements must be fulfilled, the conformity has to be declared
by manufacturer ( internal production control);
marking with CE-sign according to Pressure Equipment Directive
If the pressure transmitter of BD SENSORS GmbH should be used as part of a safety device to the protection of
another pressure equipment against the excess of allowable limits, a separate assessment is to be made. In
this case it is referred to the to the regulations 97/23/EC art. 1, 2.1.3 for safety accessories. Regarding the used
materials the requirements of 97/23/EG Annex I 4.2 apply to all three groups of pressure meters (for PS > 0,5bar).
